I like it too. It's big, it stands out, and it's a clear sign to stay the fuck away and maybe grab a fire extinguisher.

I don't like it, fire was already very easy to see and this is just cartoonishly unnecessary. Compared to what fire actually does (moderate damage per second) it's way over the top.
It's also way harder to see what someone's wearing if they're on fire, which is unhelpful given some clothing is fireproof (so you know they aren't taking damage, and vice versa).

The issue for me personally, is that realistically there are very massively different degrees of 'on fire', yet in game it's just one one fire state.
Someone spilling 10u of welding fluid on you then setting you alight is not the same as running through a room of burning plasma, for example.
The old sprite was more at the 'spilled weldering fluid on your pants' level.
The new sprite is more 'oops I fell into a barrel of petrol while smoking'.'

I gotta agree it's kind of over the top, the change was buried in a pull I didn't pay much attention to, if someone had said "oh lets make the fire sprite look like this" on its own I probably would have asked "why?".
I think the new sprite is from VG as well. I got a weird sentimentalism about keeping sprites "homegrown" where possible because it helps keep servers visually distinct.

For cleaner code I requested WJ turn the VG plasmaman fire underlay into an overlay, he agreed to do so, but then felt the sprite would do better for all mobs in general.

I'm not 100% sure if this would be possible, but what if flames started out like the original and gradually grew to being that massive flame kinda like in real life? We already have metric of how "on fire" someone is in fire stacks, it's just applied in a binary "on fire/not on fire" way right now.

Oh okay cool, if I knew more about SS13 code I would definitely give it a go. I hope someone else is able to add this, although probably have to wait until after the freeze. Also once someone dies, I don't think they should stay on fire with the new fire sprite as I agree when you say it is a little over the top.

One thing I have noticed though is that when someone is on fire and they touch someone else, it insta-spreads. I played a round where one person on the shuttle caught on fire then three seconds later everyone else was on freaking fire (including me) and died. Has it always been like this? There should at least be a small delay to when someone touches then catches fire from someone else.
Ps: I do know about the stop drop and roll, but when you go out you immediately catch fire again.
