Did hugh mongus become cringe because it was based? Or did it merely become overused because it was based, and become cringe because it was overused? Would one say that its basedness was the *cause* of its cringeworthiness? Or was it merely ancillary to the core transformation from based to cringe due to overuse?

I would say amogus was cringe but then it became based. Unless your suggestion is that it was so cringe it became based, but grew so based that it became cringe again.
Perhaps some memes are destined to be locked within a never-ending cycle oscillating between cringe and based in perpetuity.
