Bottom post of the previous page:
well, there is no written language in SS13, not even on bay I don't believe.
if you're human, you can read it, if you're an animal or a robot you get "s*me te*t li*e *his" instead.
I'm not sure how feasible localising actual text would be (Ok so, books, paper, newscasters, computer UIs, uplinks, etc) so I don't believe it can even be solved nicely.

Ayys have their own specific language on some statues that were made for them, when observed by ayys it reads out a different description however, i dont think thats actually implemented into the current game and might just be a unused asset.
Ill make another thread on some thoughts of directions to take that in.

What if instead of actually localizing text we do it the stupid way
if you know multiple languages, attempting to write on a piece of paper prompts you asking which language you're writing in - if I choose Common, anyone who knows Common can read it, but to everyone who doesn't speak Common it just garbles the text/gives a "you don't know what it says" message
Wouldn't address writing on the ground with a crayon, but.. whatever if this is on a planet it doesn't make sense to write on the ground with a crayon anyways, it's DIRT

One or two of the shroom people are translators and can talk to the hive and normies
I like the idea but I don't want the mushroom men to talk
Maybe have one or two "elders" who can read/write Common (for lack of a better term) and understand the crew? They've been around for longer so they've met with other crash survivors/whatever and learned the language when they were super young? idk
Qbopper wrote:I mentioned spores for communication as a joke but what if you actually did it
Nearby fungi could receive messages quickly, but over long distances it might take time for the spores to travel
Dunno how indepth you'd wanna go with it but that could be a unique system
ideas going in

Are those fatsprites?

make it so if they don't get enough sunlight/whatever they start to wilt and the sprite shrinks
it's deep gameplay, you have to straddle the edge between starvation and death for a smaller sprite so you're harder to click on

is it really that hard to believe that a mushroom on an alien planet might use sunlight

Not really, but they are half animal and require nutrition so will inevitably need to feed from somewhere.
Also get out, we already have podpeople.

Why make mushroom people worse than plant people?

Because healing in sunlight is bullshit, especially if these are hulk punch strength mushrooms. It'd be podmen powercreep.

that's a different argument, which I don't have any strong feelings about

Make them need water or they dry up and die, and they eat blood, gibs, etc the same way fly people do.

Water = Nutriments, always fat and chubby.
Blood & actual nutriments too. That's a good idea.
