Wing Commander: Squadron 42 - a space game that might be fun

Now I know most of you probably aren't old enough to remember the golden age of Space Pew Pew (I barely am myself) so you might be mistaken what with X:etc, Eve, Elite, No Man's Sky, and Star Citizen that that era was shoving you in a ship with a large, mostly empty and samey universe and saying "Make your own fun".


Like fuck it was. It was the Wing Commanders, X-wing vs TIE Fighters, Freespaces, and Star Lancers.
Hand crafted, focused, highly scripted mission to mission games that were the Age of the Stick.

Wing Commander was a highlight of that time, what with the FMV cutscenes with big name hollywood actors like Mark Hamill and Malcolm McDowell having lead roles.


And that is what Squadron 42 is (although apparently there's going to be a bit of a mass effect style run around the flagship and chat up bitches thing between missions too)

After being disappointed by Elite (but why the fuck can't I stop playing it? baarhhwwha want magh fed covertee) THIS is the upcoming space sim I'm actually looking forward to play.

Its a real shame that its getting completely over shadowed by the main cash cow: Star Citizen.
In fact I've found it incredibly difficult to find preview information on it and what the actual gameplay will be like other than it'll be a single player pew pew space game.

Cloud Imperium Games have been keeping Squadron 42 a big secret so there isn't too much info out there. I know the game script was leaked at one point, but I haven't seen it. As far as gameplay goes there were some devs at the first PC Gamer Weekender Trainwreck Super Show saying they were trying to make missions open, as in you had different ways of completing objects like going loud or sneaking in, changing loadouts before the mission kinda like MGS Peace Walker but with FIDELITY.

I've basically already got the Freij Mk2 fully kitted out in Privateer 2 (which I got in the GoG sale a couple of weeks ago) and finished the main storyline, so this might be neat for my fix.

P2 is a fun game but it really doesn't take long before you run out of things to do.

Yeah I'm super invested in this. Got a Constellation and a Mustang Delta.
Also went to CitizenCon 2014 and got drunk with Chris Roberts, was pretty cool man.

But yeah they've kept the single player story (Squadron 42) stuff pretty limited in terms of current info.

The frees pace wing commander time is sick as fuck. I got addicted to the speed it offered. made default free space ships feel like molasses.
