Maybe just make it an emote like *wag instead of a constant thing

I like it, I love when games have the little details you can not immediately notice but when you do you are like that's amazing!
Shaps wrote:Maybe just make it an emote like *wag instead of a constant thing
Why not have it constant? The addition of a *wag emote would be cool though, where you could just do it once.

Basically, what you're suggesting is to make the feature extremely annoying.

Less annoying, matter of fact.
If people wanted to spam emotes, they could just *nod all day.

Demon, spamming emotes isn't tied to the text, it's tied to the unique sound/animation/effect that triggers along with the spammable ones:
*deathgasp aliens
*flip anybody
*wag anybody (should it be changed.)

*wag is fine as a continuous animation tied to *stopwag

Then again feel free to ignore me since I'm clearly biased as the one porting this.

This would look way more acceptable if it wasn't so dramatic, and if we had idle animations on humans. It looks strangely out of place.

Humans should get a finger snapping animation to counter this.

I really don't get how this brought about such big discussion.

For those of you who like lizards:
This is good, more lizard stuff

For those of you who hate lizards and think they are hitlers:
They're already hitlers, they don't really get more hitlery

I have not seen one good reason why people hate lizards or those who choose to play as them. I would say to go ahead with the PR, it is a neat and harmless feature which is purely cosmetic.

We should also port Cat-people to troll all the racist hitlers who give Lizard players such a hard time.

Reason being, people fear that which they do not know.

(I mean, people hate furfags and anyone who might possibly be accused of fucking animals.)

Having constant tail wagging might be distracting, I think just having the tail wagging play once on emoting *wag would work best since lizards would use it to express something... Good I guess? I mean, I imagine tail wagging would mean you're happy.

Not annoying as in people will spam it, annoying as in everytime you want to use it you have to hit tab and type say *wag and hit tab again (unless you don't use hotkeys, then you don't need to hit tab, but the point still stands).

All we need is a right/left-view sidewag animation, instead of the up-and-down that it is now.

It's both.
No really, it's both.

E/W, it bobs up and down
N/S it sways left to right.

Blame the animator if you hate it, Praise them if you like it, it is what it is, animating sidewags on E/W would be annoying as shit so I see why they did it this way.

Sooo... we don't have idle, running, walking, animations for humans for obvious reasons (ease of sprite maintenance, less work required to add new sprites) but lizards absolutely have to have an animated tail?

Both of your responses are loaded with hate, that's great.
I didn't do this for /those/ people, tbh I don't give a rat's arse what they do in their spare time so long as it doesn't hurt anyone.
I did it because it's a cute animation, the code is alright, and it further differentiates our two main species in a way that doesn't affect gameplay.

as for "absolutely have to" take your head out your arse.

It's not a cute animation, the up/down one looks retarded like their tail is a puppet prop on a bit of string being jerked up and down. Man up and side/side.

Obviously I'd prefer it if this PR fucked right off, but it's not going to, so whatever.

Doesn't change the fact that up/down-wagging has problems, and side-side is possible via shading.

This is a fucking retarded idea. Firstly, It would make spriting anything involving lizard tails in the future almost impossible, as pointed out by WJ on the actual PR. Secondly, it's completely out of place, since nothing else in the whole game does shit like this. Thirdly, what little benefits it DOES have could be accomplished with a simple *wag that displays "X wags their tail." Fourth, and this is just personal opinions, but the type of people this would attract would be unsavory, AND the animations don't even look that nice.

It is a wonderful side-to-side animation, up and down could use some work (think space carps here), but I love the feature anyway. I had been looking at ways to add WJohn's lizard fins and what-not as "hair" for Lizards, if that PR does not get destroyed by the e-bigots. I find it a wonderful concept, and I do hope you can get it merged.

Just talk to WJ every round, he's handing out stupid-looking sprites to lizard players apparently.

I want to work with him on making his sprites a roundstart choice for lizards, much like humans have for hair. If we have the tail wagging thing, then I will probably stick to head-sprites only. I am hoping that it will be as simple as adding new accessory datums with a flag that designates them as lizard accessories, just as hairs can be restricted by gender.

I don't mind the sprites if they're added as a selection, I just think giving special sprites to people who ask for "sits-in-brig.dmi"(or whatever) as their sprite in-game isn't really kosher.

It makes disguising as those lizards literally impossible, and eventually something will pull WJohn's attention away from customizing characters every single round and we'll be left with a bunch of entitled space furries bitching about why they can't have a tail that looks like an axe. I don't want to have to live in that dark future, so I'd really just like for these things to be codified properly.

Re: Lizards wagging tails (no seriously this isn't a joke th

It doesn't change disguises at all.
All the things that hide a normal tail hide a wagging tail, the problem is tied to the species itself, not this new addition.

Not to mention Incoming, your mutant body part system doesn't handle snowflake players either, when you have to add that in for the snowflakes you seem adamant on making a feature, it'll also cover wagging animations! because I used your system which is nice and generic, if you made it less generic just for snowflakes it probably wouldn't even get in.

tl;dr Non-issue.

No you misunderstand, I was talking about the snowflake players in that last post.

The point I was trying to make was that when you add the tail wagging it makes the de-snowing of Wjohns effort that much less likely to ever happen, because every tail he made goes from a static sprite to a tail wag animation. It's not an issue now, but it's a future issue for whoever has to deal with the other's feature.

It's basically a race where the loser has to animate a bunch of custom lizard tails (or cut out custom tails all together, which is probably more apt to happen).
